Dr. Hamparsum(“Ham”)Bozdoganis Toby and Brenda McKenzie Chair Professor inBusiness, Information Complexity and in Model Selection in the Department of Statistics, Operations, and Management Science in the College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK), Tennessee. He is also a faculty member in theCenter for Intelligent Systems and Machine Learning (CISML) at UTK.
Dr. Bozdogan received his B.S. degree in Mathematics, 1970 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and both of his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics, 1978 and 1981, respectively, from the University of Illinois at Chicago majoring in Probability and Statistics (Multivariate Statistical Analysis and Model Selection) with a full-minor in Operations Research. He joined the faculty of UT in the Fall of 1990. Prior to coming to UT he was on the faculty of the University of Virginia in the Department of Mathematics, and was a Visiting Associate Professor and Research Fellow at the prestigious “Akaike’s Institute,” The Institute of Statistical Mathematics in Tokyo, Japan during 1988. During this year, he received the prestigiousResearch Assignment Leave Award from the Graduate School of Advanced Studies from the University of Virginia.
Dr. Bozdogan is a nationally and internationally recognized renowned expert in the area of information-theoretic statistical modeling and model selection. In particular, on the celebrated Akaike’s (1971) Information Criterion (AIC), he has extended its range of applications broadly, and has identified and repaired its lack of consistency with a new criterion of his own which is now being used in many statistical software packages including SAS,JMP, EQS, etc. Dr. Bozdogan is the developer of a new model selection and validation criterion called ICOMP (ICOMP for ‘information complexity’). His new criterion for model selection cleverly seeks, through information theoretic ideas, to find a balance among badness of fit, lack of parsimony, and profusion of complexity in high-dimensional complex data structures by combining scalability properties in data mining. From this basic work, he has undertaken the technical and computational implementation of the criterion to many areasof applications. These include: choosing the number of component clusters in mixture-model cluster analysis, determining the number for factors in Frequentist and Bayesian factor analysis, dynamic econometric modeling of food consumption and demand in the U.S. and the Netherlands, detecting influential observations in vector autoregressive models, to mention a few. His results elucidate many current inferential problems in statistics in linear and nonlinear multivariate models and ill-posed problems. His informational modeling techniques are currently being used by many doctoral students at UT, in US, and around the world.
Dr. Bozdogan is the recipient of many distinguished teaching and research awards such as:
● The High Dimensional Data Mining (HDM-2008) Conference Award Plaque from the Mayor of the City of Kayseri, Turkey, June 2008.
● Received two International Outreach Awards from the Fifth Congress of the Turkish Statistical Association and from the Dean of Arts & Sciences of MimarSinan University in Istanbul Turkey, June 2007.
● The prestigious Jefferson Faculty Prize Award for 2006 of the University of Tennessee. The Jefferson Prize was established through an endowment by an anonymous donor who wanted to recognize tenured or tenure-track faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in research and creative activity or have made other significant achievements that might not be recognized in the usual university reward system.
● The Medal of Honor Award Plaque from the Governor of Fethiye Municipality, Turkey for his outstanding contribution to the International Conference in Inverse Problems: Modeling and Simulation, June 2004.
● Haslam Teaching/Curriculum Innovation Program (HTCIP) Awardof the College of Business Administration (CBA), Spring, 2004.
● The Bank of America Faculty Leadership Medal Award of the College of Business Administration (CBA), April 2001.
● The Hoechst Roussel Teaching and Research Award of the College of Business Administration (CBA), April, 1997.
● Won World Research Competition Award in applied econometric modeling among 28 worldwide participating teams to forecast U.S. and Dutch food consumption during September 1996.
● Chancellor’s Award for Research and Creative Achievement, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), April 7, 1993. This award is given each year to 10 UTK faculties who have recently made significant contributions in their field of study.

His current research innovations are in developing intelligent hybrid models between any complex modeling problem, genetic algorithms (GA’s) and his information complexity criterion as the fitness function. Coupled with this, his current research is focused in a long-standing problem of model selection under misspecification. He is developing new techniques which are robust and misspecification resistant. This is important because this new approach provides researchers and practitioners with knowledge of how to guard against the misspecification of the model as we actually fit and evaluate these models and guard against potential outliers in the data set. In practice, almost always researchers and practitioners alike misspecify their models for a given particular data set. In this sense, these new developments and results are very important in many areas of applied and basic research (e.g., in business analytics, engineering, social and behavioral, andmedical data mining: http://quest.utk.edu/2010/stalking-a-serial-killer/ ), which is currently ignored.

Prof. Dr. C. Warren Neel

Corporate Governance Center
C. Warren Neel, Ph.D. recently returned to the University of Tennessee to establish a Corporate Governance Center and is serving as its Executive Director. Until February 2003, he was Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration. In this role, he was the Governor’s chief financial officer for Tennessee state government and managed over a $20 billion budget. His office provided executive direction to the department and coordinated divisional activities as they related to other agencies. The department acted as the chief corporate office of state government, and its purview also extended throughout the state.
Prior to joining the State Cabinet, Dr. Neel served as Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During his tenure, he also served in the Cabinet of Governor Lamar Alexander and was a member of the transition team for Secretary of Education Alexander where his focus was on post-secondary education in the United States.
His academic career began in the University of Tennessee’s Department of Management where his research focus was on corporate policy. His publications appeared in numerous management journals. More recently, he has published essays in a number of the nation’s leading newspapers.
Dr. Neel has served on nine corporate boards in his career and currently is a board member of a NYSE and NASDAQ-listed company. His board experience has included chair roles on a variety of committees including audit, compensation, nominating, and governance, in addition to having chaired special committees conducting fraud audits, acquisitions, mergers, and the sale of the business.
Dr. Neel’s primary corporate governance interest is the distribution of power between the board and the CEO/Chairman.

Prof. Dr. Peter L. Slavin
President, Massachusetts General Hospital
Professor at Harvard Medical School
Peter L. Slavin, MD, has been the president of Massachusetts General Hospital since 2003. From 1999–2002, he served as chairman and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, which included over 1,700 physicians and employed nearly 1,000 of them.
From 1997–1999, Dr. Slavin served as president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Miss. Before that, he did his training in internal medicine at Mass General from 1984–1987 and was senior vice president and chief medical officer from 1994–1997.
Dr. Slavin graduated from Harvard College in 1979, Harvard Medical School in 1984 and Harvard Business School in 1990.
Dr. Slavin teaches internal medicine and health care management at Harvard Medical School, where he is a professor of health care policy. He lectures widely on topics including quality and utilization management, the economics of teaching hospitals and the state of physician practices.
